Aloma (Cookie) Gender, RN, MSN, CRRN-R, is an administrator and nurse executive with more than 40 years of experience in creative leadership at rehabilitation health care facilities. She has a demonstrated track record of delivering quality, cost-effective nursing and clinical care through competencies in strategic analysis, problem-solving, decision-making, teaching, performance improvement, audit tool development, and utilization of computer technology. She is a noted author of more than 16 published professional articles and an accomplished speaker with more than 45 platform presentations.
Cookie has been active in the national Association of Rehabilitation Nurses and served as president for two years in 1992 and 1993. Prior to that, she served as chair of the Rehabilitation Nursing Certification Board and the Rehabilitation Nursing Institute. She served six years on the editorial board of the Rehabilitation Nursing Journal and the board of trustees for CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities), representing the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
In 1998, Cookie received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
Cookie has lectured nationally and internationally on various rehabilitation nursing and leadership topics. She has published numerous articles and written chapters for four rehabilitation nursing textbooks (S. P. Hoeman's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions of Rehabilitation Nursing and P. A. Chin, D. Finocchiaro, and A. Rosebrough's Rehabilitation Nursing Practice) and one management textbook. In addition, she has been a contributing writer to three editions of Rehabilitation Nursing Concepts and Practice: A Core Curriculum, published by the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
Cookie received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of San Diego and her master's degree in nursing systems administration from San Diego State University. She is a founding member of the Zeta Mu chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.
