This course gives participants a detailed description of how to implement and use the evidence-based clinical practice of bedside shift reporting with nursing staff and patients to improve patient outcomes and to increase patient and staff satisfaction. The benefits of bedside shift reporting will be presented. Specific steps on how to implement and hardwire bedside shift reporting will be discussed. This course is appropriate for nurses and nurse leaders working in any inpatient setting, but particularly targets those in acute rehab and acute care settings. This course would also be appropriate for SNF and LTC settings.

1. Definition of Bedside Shift Reporting and Steps in the Process

Rehabilitation and acute care nurse leaders and nurses should be able to explain the positive effects of bedside shift reporting on patient outcomes, as well as on patient and staff satisfaction. This chapter will list those outcomes and the steps that make up the bedside shift reporting process.

2. Bedside Shift Reporting Benefits and Sustainability

Studies have validated positive patient outcomes, as well as benefits to nursing practice, related to bedside shift reporting. This chapter will review some of those studies and their findings. Sustainability issues are also addressed. The content can be used by nurse leaders to assist in staff education.

3. Implementation of Bedside Shift Reporting

Nursing leaders need to know how to implement and hardwire bedside shift reporting. This chapter will identify those steps and also present some tools to use to share outcomes with nursing staff.
