The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released the Skilled Nursing Facility’s (SNF) Final Rule for Fiscal Year 2020. This is the final chapter leading up to the implementation of the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM), replacing the twenty-year-old Skilled Nursing Facility’s (SNF) Resource Utilization Groups (RUGs) payment system. Providers will want to focus on insuring the latest information on the PDPM model is integrated into their operational systems. Moreover, now is the time to ensure your auditing and compliance teams are clear on what metrics are going to be important to monitor.
The system will fundamentally change how care in a SNF is delivered. Rather than a focus on the volume and type of services delivered, the new model will focus on the characteristics of each patient admitted. Financial success will depend on the integration of systems for patient assessment and appropriate care delivery.
