Patricia Stott

PT, DPT, ATC, CHT, CYT

Patricia Stott treats primarily those with HSD/EDS and those considered highly sensitive patients at her own practice, Elevation Wellness, outside the Denver metro area in Colorado. Also trained in functional and herbal medicine, she works on health and wellness through holistic strategies with these patients, both in person and through telehealth appointments. With an extensive background in orthopedics, she now focuses on interventions for the autonomic nervous system, neural manipulation, visceral manipulation, and craniofacial work to treat the more complicated patients who have not fared well in standard rehab settings. Her specialities with this population include upper cervical instability, median arcuate ligament dysfunction, and spinal cord tethering.

Patty has previously created courses about HSD/EDS for medical professionals and continues to work to educate patients and medical practitioners. She was a coauthor of the 2019 Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal article "Recognizing and Effectively Managing Hypermobility-Related Conditions" and the 2023 Frontiers in Neurology journal article "Presentation and Physical Therapy Management of Upper Cervical Instability in Patients With Symptomatic Generalized Joint Hypermobility: International Expert Consensus Recommendations." She is a cohost for the North American EDS ECHO for Allied Health Professionals and is also a member of the EDS International Consortium. Patty and colleague Heather Purdin are currently composing a two-volume book series on HSD/EDS for the physical therapist and patient.

Video Runtime: 144 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 44 Minutes

A patient with HSD/EDS commonly experiences pathologies developing in the upper extremity due to laxity combined with functional use. Laxity, subluxations, and dislocations can be more common in those with HSD/EDS, and increased use of the hypermobile upper extremities can lead to overuse injuries. Finding the appropriate individualized support and therapeutic strategies for upper extremity issues in HSD/EDS can not only improve function and pain, but quality of life as well.

Thoracic and Lumbar Spine Presentation in HSD/EDS

Presented by Heather Purdin, MSPT, CMPT and Patricia Stott, PT, DPT, ATC, CHT, CYT

Thoracic and Lumbar Spine Presentation in HSD/EDS

Video Runtime: 120 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 48 Minutes

The thoracic cavity typically presents as a stable compartment of standard anatomy. However, patients with HSD/EDS may present with pathologies of the thoracic outlet, thoracic spine, ribs, and diaphragm more commonly than seen in the general population. For a patient with HSD/EDS, this area can be frustrating to treat with continued rib subluxations that become difficult to keep in place. Understanding how the different components of the thoracic cavity work together can improve outcomes with interventional strategies. This, combined with knowledge of how the body with HSD/EDS responds, can lead to improved long-term management goals. The lumbar spine can have peculiar neurological findings in HSD/EDS that should be screened for. Instability, subluxation, and guarding are common, and evaluation and treatment will be covered.

The cranial bones are connected by sutures, which are fibrous joints. The brain is covered with dura, a type of connective tissue. For patients with an underlying connective tissue disorder, the cranium can be a source of chronic issues if the cause is not identified and treated effectively. This course will cover commonly seen issues throughout the cranium and discuss ideas for treatment strategies and referrals to improve outcomes. Recognition of these conditions is imperative to overall wellness; therefore, the information is applicable to all allied health professionals in all settings.

A patient with hypermobility spectrum disorder or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (HSD/EDS) commonly experiences pathologies developing in the lower extremity due to laxity combined with movement faults. Laxity, subluxations, and dislocations can be more common in those with HSD/EDS, and increased joint play can lead to guarding, pain, and further subluxation. Finding the appropriate individualized support and therapeutic strategies for lower extremity issues in HSD/EDS can improve not only function and pain but also quality of life.

Introduction to HSD/EDS

Presented by Heather Purdin, MSPT, CMPT and Patricia Stott, PT, DPT, ATC, CHT, CYT

Introduction to HSD/EDS

Video Runtime: 64 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 42 Minutes

This is an introductory course into the connective tissue disorder presentation of hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). It is important for practitioners to recognize the difference in systemic connective tissue involvement and how this will present in their patients. We review the involvement of connective tissue, the classifications, and the team approach strategy to take for efficient patient care in this population. This course is appropriate for those in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and nursing.

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders

Presented by Heather Purdin, MSPT, CMPT and Patricia Stott, PT, DPT, ATC, CHT, CYT

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 66 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 36 Minutes

This course provides a general introduction to the presentation of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorders, the most commonly diagnosed connective tissue disorders. Information provided will begin to open the eyes of the provider in understanding the complexity of this patient population and what is involved in these disorders. Understanding the compounding issues a patient is dealing with can help improve treatment strategies and allow for better outcomes and long-term management strategies. A brief review of general management strategies is provided to demonstrate how this patient population should be approached in a rehab setting. This course is appropriate for those in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and nursing.

Video Runtime: 99 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 48 Minutes

This course discusses ways to progress and modify manual therapy interventions to address changing symptoms of the HSD/EDS patient. It highlights typical postural faults for those affected by hypermobility and tissue laxity and their effects at distant joints in the body. It outlines exercise progression continuums to consider when choosing an exercise. It educates the learner in lifestyle modifications that will assist with regulation of the autonomic nervous system, and how to modify exercises for those struggling with POTS/fatigue. It clarifies current expert opinion about stretching for this population. Lastly, it discusses the biopsychosocial approach and coaching tips for managing physiologic issues, psychological symptoms, and social implications. This course is appropriate for those in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and athletic training.

Video Runtime: 91 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 42 Minutes

This course dives deeper into the more complex presentation of HSD and EDS. While these conditions can be confusing in their presentation, there are also correlated conditions that are more prevalent with a diagnosis of HSD or EDS that can be confusing, overlapping, and/or misunderstood. We begin to take a closer look at some of the more commonly seen issues and their potential causes, along with red flags in this population for the practitioner to be able to recognize and treat or refer out as appropriate. This course is appropriate for those in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and nursing.
