1. Anatomy and Physiology of Connective Tissue Disorders
HSD and EDS are connective tissue disorders involving multiple systems throughout the body. We review what connective tissue is involved in these disorders and how this manifests in the patient’s body. Hypermobility spectrum disorders and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are defined.
2. The History of HSD/EDS
The history of EDS in the literature is explored within this chapter. We also discuss the evolution of EDS and HSD classifications along with the reasoning behind the new classification system.
3. Diagnosis and Classifications
Within this chapter, we briefly review which classifications we are able to genetically test for before discussing individual types of EDS and HSD. The general presentation is briefly reviewed with each classification of HSD and EDS.
4. Common Comorbidities and Systemic Involvement
Arguably, the most important understanding of those with a connective tissue disorder is that it affects more than the joints. This chapter briefly reviews the systems and presentation potentially seen globally looking at the HSD/EDS diagnosis. Understanding this component can expand the practitioner’s mind into more efficient treatment plans or referrals out as needed.
5. Team Approach to Treating HSD/EDS
This chapter highlights the challenges in putting together an adequate care team and who should be the lead on the team. This chapter discusses the many systems of the body that will need management due to issues with connective tissue. The learner will have insight into what qualities to look for in good referral sources.
