George Barnes is a board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders and has developed an expertise in dysphagia management, focusing on diagnostics and clinical decision-making in the medically complex population. George yearns to make education useful, research clinically focused, and quality care accessible. He cofounded a mobile FEES service to expand access to high-quality dysphagia services. He pushes forward various patient-centered initiatives through his work with the SIG 13 Dysphagia Editorial Committee, the NJSHA Dysphagia Subcommittee, and participation in various interdisciplinary teams in the hospital setting.

With a passion for food and a deep appreciation for the joy and connection it gives to our lives, he has dedicated his life to helping others enjoy this simple but deep-rooted pleasure.

Conquering the Barriers to Making Effective Clinical Decisions (Recorded Webinar)

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 109 Minutes; Learning Assessment Time: 19 Minutes

Do you work in healthcare? Do you make decisions? What would you say if you knew a high percentage of those decisions might make your patient worse instead of better? Healthcare practitioners are highly susceptible to biases and heuristics, creating a high risk of errors in decision-making. In fact, healthcare workers may make errors in up to 77% of the decisions they make. This webinar will improve clinicians' ability to examine their own decision-making processes and adopt research-based strategies to improve those processes. At the end of the presentation, these strategies will be examined in a real case study so you can have practical takeaways for your patients.

Most SLP graduate programs do not extensively address tracheostomy tube and mechanical ventilation management, leaving SLPs underprepared for necessary responsibilities in critical illness environments.

This webinar will help to close this gap between graduate school and effective practice through an extensive review of tracheostomy tubes and mechanical ventilation. Every SLP who helps patients with dysphagia and communication challenges after tracheostomy tube and ventilator dependence will benefit from the reviews included in this presentation, including types of mechanical ventilation, airflow changes, occluding the tracheostomy tube hub, and critical decision-making for speaking valve use and PO intake.

We will also discuss effective approaches to managing communication difficulties and dysphagia in this population, using research-based approaches and clinical problem-solving in a relevant case study. Through this presentation, participants will acquire a foundation of information related to theoretical frameworks for effective care delivery along with practical takeaways that can be incorporated immediately into their SLP practice.

Many graduate school programs don't address postextubation respiratory failure and swallowing status, leaving SLP graduates underprepared for the responsibilities they may be tasked with. This webinar will help close the gap between graduate school and effective practice with an extensive review of the respiratory system, respiratory disease, and respiratory failure, benefiting SLPs who manage dysphagia in critical illness environments. Additionally, we will discuss effective approaches to assess and manage dysphagia after extubation, as well as research-based approaches and clinical problem-solving in a relevant case study. This presentation will provide a foundation of information related to the respiratory system and respiratory disease, theoretical frameworks for effective clinical care delivery, and practical takeaways that medical SLPs can use in their own practice immediately.
