Parkinson's disease is not the same as parkinsonism, from the cellular mechanism and pathophysiology to the presentation, prognosis, and treatment. This course will clarify the main clinical subtypes of parkinsonisms, including vascular and inherited, as well as multiple systems atrophies, corticobasal ganglionic degeneration (CBGD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and a differential with Huntington's disease. Viewers should expect comprehensive coverage of these topics. If you are a PT or an OT, you will learn the basics of differentiation, treatment, and treatment timing, as well as what to expect based on the evidence presented in this course.

1. Neurophysiology of Parkinson's Disease: Structurally Differentiating to Help

In this chapter, we will review the neuropathologies of three Parkinson's disease subtypes and parkinsonisms and reveal neurorehabilitative opportunities in each where plausible.

2. Neurophysiology of Parkinsonisms: The Basis for Each Disorder

In this chapter, we will name each form of parkinsonism and review the respective neuropathologies of Parkinson's disease, contrasting the degenerative and static processes of each.

3. Clinical Examination: Movement Disorders and the Differential Diagnosis of PD vs. Parkinsonisms

This chapter will help the learner understand how to identify movement disorders and use evidence and science to make the best clinical determination of PD versus parkinsonisms, as well as which subtype may be presenting.

4. Rehabilitative Approaches in Freezing of Gait (FoG): Turns, Directions, and Initiation

In this chapter, viewers can expect to learn about the physiology of freezing of gait (FoG), the interventions, and ultimately the basis for treatment: rehabilitative, disease-modifying, or compensatory.

5. Rehabilitation Approaches for Cognitive Impairment and Dementias: FTD, LBD, PD, and Select Parkinsonisms

In this chapter, viewers will learn rehabilitative differences in the expected presentations of and responses to intervention for the MSAs. The chapter will focus on building treatment plans, establishing goals, and educating families.

6. Rehabilitation Approaches in the Most Common Parkinsonisms: Applications for CBGD, Multiple-System Atrophies (A, P, and C), and PSP

In this chapter, attendees will learn rehabilitative differences in the expected presentations of and responses to intervention for the remaining parkinsonisms: CBGD, FTD, and PSP. The chapter will focus on building treatment plans, establishing goals, and educating families.

7. Ruling Out PD and Parkinsonisms: Ruling In Functional Neurologic Disorders

This chapter will discuss functional neurologic disorders (FNDs). The best information to date about differential diagnoses for FNDs versus PD and parkinsonisms will be discussed.

8. Summary

In this chapter, we will summarize main points from the presentation for learners to adopt.

9. Question and Answer Session

This chapter is a viewer-submitted question and answer session facilitated by Mike Studer.
