1. Introduction to Sexuality in Long-Term Care
In this chapter, we will introduce the agenda and learning objectives for this course, and present an example of a scenario you may encounter in your facility to discuss how to react when you observe two residents engaging in intimate acts of sexual expression.
2. Understanding and Managing Sexuality in the Older Resident
The difference between consensual intimacy versus sexual assault will be outlined in this section. The subject of consent, and how this is determined, will also be reviewed. This chapter will teach nursing assistants how to react appropriately to residents engaging in intimate acts of sexual expression, and how to make sure that resident safety is always a priority. In addition, sexually inappropriate behavior directed toward nursing assistants will be discussed, and methods to set clear boundaries for personal safety will be described.
3. Putting It All Together
In this chapter, we will return to the example scenario presented in Chapter One and discuss when sexual expression between two residents is and is not appropriate, as well as what the nursing assistant can do to manage those situations in the future.
