The field of ethics is complicated and affects many components of our careers. This course will cover the basic principles of ethics as they relate to therapy practice and will then review the required codes of ethics for occupational therapy and speech-language pathology professionals. Multiple current applications of ethics for clinicians will be shared, including such areas as ethical professional boundaries, confidentiality requirements, and ethical decisions where multiple factors must be considered. The CELIBATE method for analyzing ethical dilemmas will be reviewed to equip attendees with a process for making ethical decisions.

Lisa Milliken received her BA from Louisiana Tech University and her MA from the University of Memphis in audiology and speech-language pathology. 1. The Principles and Terminology of Ethics, Related to OT and SLP Professionals

This chapter will review the key principles of ethics, as well as the definitions of common terminology of ethics, found to be significant in a variety of clinical settings. Applications will be shared as they relate to occupational and speech-language pathology professionals.

2. The AOTA and ASHA Codes of Ethics

This chapter will cover the AOTA code of ethics, which governs occupational therapy, and the ASHA code of ethics, which governs speech-language pathology practice. Current applications of each respective code of ethics will be shared.

3. Ethical Boundaries and HIPAA’s Confidentiality Requirements

This chapter will initially review the definitions and examples of the ethical boundaries between clinicians and their clients. Then the confidentiality requirements will be discussed, based on ethical and HIPAA laws, including example citations when such laws are broken. These concepts will be shared for their application to daily clinical practice.

4. A Decision-Making Model for Ethical Dilemmas

This chapter will share the steps to a model for analyzing ethical dilemmas with a decision-making process. Applications of example ethical scenarios will be shared for this model to be utilized in a variety of clinical settings.
