Kelly earned her bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology through Stockton University in New Jersey, her master's degree in speech pathology at New York University, and, in 2018, her doctorate in speech-language pathology at Nova Southeastern University. She completed a research study examining swallowing-related outcomes for individuals undergoing specialized robotic surgery for head and neck cancer as part of her applied dissertation.

Kelly takes pride in contributing to the field of speech-language pathology through teaching and supervising graduate-level students, presenting posters and courses at national conferences, and engaging in multidisciplinary research initiatives. Presented by Kelly Salmon, SLPD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLT-LANA, NDC

Management of Total Laryngectomy: Pre- and Postoperative Care

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 65 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 50 Minutes

Laryngeal cancer accounts for approximately 1% of all new cancer diagnoses worldwide. For some individuals with advanced stages of laryngeal cancer, failure of targeted organ preservation therapies, or a dysfunctional larynx, surgical intervention may be recommended in the form of a total laryngectomy (TL). Management of individuals undergoing TL requires a specific set of knowledge and skills to ensure successful outcomes postoperatively.

This course is recommended for speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, registered nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers practicing in hospital, outpatient, skilled nursing, home care, private practice, or outpatient settings who are interested in learning more about the care of individuals undergoing total laryngectomy during the preoperative and immediate postoperative phases. This course will provide the participant with a foundation upon which to develop the skills necessary to care for individuals for whom total laryngectomy has been recommended. Participants will gain insight into the role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) in the preoperative evaluation and counseling process. In addition, care of the individual in the acute postoperative phase will be addressed, including the roles of the SLP and the interprofessional team in ensuring that the individual post TL is able to: (a) complete self-care activities related to postsurgical anatomic changes, (b) communicate effectively, and (c) establish expectations related to breathing, communication, and swallowing function.

Management of Total Laryngectomy: Rehabilitation to Survivorship

Presented by Kelly Salmon, SLPD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLT-LANA, NDC

Management of Total Laryngectomy: Rehabilitation to Survivorship

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 85 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 56 Minutes

For individuals diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in the United States, five-year survival rates are 61% for localized disease, 48% for regional disease, and 42% for distant disease (American Cancer Society, 2019). As a result, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a critical role in managing issues unique to total laryngectomy (TL) for many years post surgery. Management of individuals post TL through the various stages of survivorship requires a specific set of knowledge and skills to effectively manage the unique challenges affecting respiration, communication, and swallowing in this population. This course will provide the participant with practical knowledge on the topic of managing the issues unique to individuals post TL that can be applied immediately in the clinical setting. This course is recommended for speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, registered nurses, occupational therapists, and social workers practicing in a hospital, outpatient, skilled nursing, home care, private practice, or outpatient setting who are interested in learning more about the care of the individual undergoing total laryngectomy during the rehabilitation and survivorship phases. Participants will gain insight and actionable steps to take toward mastering the skills necessary to manage breathing, communication, and swallowing differences post TL.
