FEES: Normal Variant vs. Anatomical  Abnormality

Presented by Gerrita Morris, MA, CCC-SLP

FEES: Normal Variant vs. Anatomical Abnormality

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 40 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 27 Minutes

In recent years, due to technological advances in camera and light quality in FEES, it has become more prevalent and respected in the instrumental evaluation of swallowing. Recent research has shown that more anatomical abnormalities are being identified via FEES, which allows the SLP to make appropriate referrals for swift treatment. However, there is limited training and education available with a focus on FEES. This course will aid clinicians in understanding the difference between normal variants of anatomy and anatomical abnormalities to ensure that overreferring or underreferring is not a problem. Additionally, clinicians will be able to identify anatomical abnormalities and provide the appropriate referrals to the correct specialists, which will ensure an expeditious treatment is provided. Speech-language pathologists who work in any medical setting (acute care hospitals, private practice, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, long-term care, long-term acute care hospitals, rehab hospitals, specialty hospitals, etc.) or who plan to work in a medical setting will benefit from this course.

FEES: Normal vs. Abnormal Swallow Function

Presented by Gerrita Morris, MA, CCC-SLP

FEES: Normal vs. Abnormal Swallow Function

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 42 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 27 Minutes

In recent years, due to technological advances and increased accessibility, FEES has become more prevalent and respected in the instrumental evaluation of swallowing. Recent research has shown that FEES is an excellent tool for not only detecting aspiration and residue but also in determining effective treatment. Determining the cause of dysphagia allows for effective and efficient treatment potentially reducing length of stays and diminishing the costs of altered diets and alternate feeding sources. However, there is limited training and education available with focus on FEES. At the end of this course, clinicians will understand the difference between normal variants of swallowing function and deficits in swallowing function that require treatment or modifications in diet, and they will know the presentation or technique to recommend appropriate diets and ensure they are not over or under treating to achieve optimal outcomes for patients. Clinicians will be able to identify normal (or functional) vs. abnormal swallowing results and proceed with appropriate diet recommendations and treatment protocol. Speech-language pathologists who work in or plan to work in any medical setting (acute care hospitals, private practice, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, long-term care, long-term acute care hospitals, rehab hospitals, specialty hospitals, etc.) would benefit from this course.

FEES: Compensatory Strategies to Improve Swallowing Functionality

Subscribe now, and access clinical education and patient education—anytime, anywhere—with video instruction from recognized industry experts.
Video Runtime: 54 Minutes, Learning Assessments: 27 Minutes

In recent years, due to technological advances and increased accessibility, FEES has become more prevalent and respected in the instrumental evaluation of swallowing. Recent research has shown that FEES is an excellent tool for not only detecting aspiration and residue but also in determining effective treatment. The use of FEES as a diagnostic tool is also helpful when planning possible compensatory strategies and techniques to improve swallowing safety. There are virtually no limits to the ability to visualize these techniques with FEES. Determining the cause of dysphagia and the compensatory possibilities allows for effective and efficient treatment. However, there is limited training and education available with focus on FEES. At the end of this course, clinicians will understand the use of FEES to assess the patient's swallowing with multiple compensatory strategies and techniques that will enhance treatment of dysphagia as well as aid in placing patients on the least restrictive diet. These techniques will assist the clinician in treatment planning to ensure for optimal outcomes for patients. Speech-language pathologists who work in any medical setting (hospitals, home health, long-term care, IRFs, SNFs, LTACHs, ENT offices, ALFs, private practices, etc.) or plan to work in a medical setting would benefit from this course.
