This course helps the learner understand and integrate several classification systems and guidelines. First, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) assists all healthcare professionals with speaking a consistent language and understanding the multifaceted impact of a health condition on an individual's life. The second chapter covers clinical practice guidelines: how they're developed, where to find them, and how to best use them. Lastly, the lumbar treatment-based classification (TBC) system is discussed, which removes the ambiguity of a pathoanatomical diagnosis and provides a straightforward direction for treatment.

1. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) assists all healthcare professionals with speaking a consistent language and understanding the multifaceted impact of a health condition on an individual’s life. Next, we apply the ICF to a commonly known health condition to understand the coordination of individual parts of the ICF.

2. Clinical Practice Guidelines

Clinical practice guidelines are invaluable tools that compile best evidence by experts in the field. PTs are often not aware of CPGs or are unsure how to utilize them. You will find that CPGs are linked to the ICF. This chapter solves both problems. In addition, the learner will demonstrate learning by obtaining a CPG and applying it to a patient case.

3. Lumbar Treatment-Based Classification System

First, we present the case for why a different approach to managing patients with LBP is warranted. Next, we present different classification systems. Finally, we go in depth regarding TBC development and its newest iteration. The learner will have the opportunity to apply TBC to a case vignette.
