Supervisors of students and paraprofessionals in the allied health professions may not be aware of the ethical, moral, and privacy issues that may arise with the use of electronic media. This course will assist professionals in understanding the guidelines and regulations regarding the appropriate use of electronic media in the allied health professions from a clinical education perspective. The characteristics of digital natives and digital immigrants will be explored. This course will identify a variety of digital media and consider strategies that will assist with the reduction of electronic media abuse by student clinicians. Real-life scenarios, along with solutions, will be discussed by allied health professionals. This course is designed for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists who work with students and/or paraprofessionals.

1. Characteristics of Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants

This chapter explores the definitions and characteristics of digital natives and digital immigrants. Digital media tools and their functions will also be reviewed.

2. Clinical Scenarios: Part 1

This chapter will introduce clinical scenarios that focus on the inappropriate versus appropriate use of electronic media by allied health students. Solutions will be discussed in Chapter 4.

3. Regulations, Standards, and Guidelines for Social Media Use

This chapter will identify and discuss standards, guidelines, and regulations for electronic media use by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists. State and regional rules for students and paraprofessionals will be reviewed.

4. Clinical Scenarios: Part 2

This chapter will review and discuss the scenarios from Chapter 2. A panel of allied health professionals will discuss solutions and identify abuses of electronic media by students and/or paraprofessionals.
