Parkinson's disease and related disorders are systemic disorders resulting in complex issues impacting health, function, and participation. Healthcare professionals must be equipped to provide care in an ever-changing healthcare environment. This course provides therapists and other healthcare professionals advanced knowledge in examination of the client with Parkinson's disease and related disorders across all stages of the disease. Information is presented using a case study example interwoven with evidence-based information. On completion of the course, the participant will be able to compare and contrast across parkinsonian syndromes and analyze how the unique symptoms of each impact our care of that client.

Deb Kegelmeyer, PT, DPT, MS, GCS

Dr. Kegelmeyer has more than 30 years of clinical experience and is currently a professor of health and rehabilitation sciences at The Ohio State University. She has extensive clinical expertise, having worked in acute care and outpatient therapy, and spent 10 years as director of physical therapy at a skilled nursing facility. Currently she works…

1. Parkinsonism Signs and Symptoms

Parkinson’s disease is the most common form of parkinsonism. Its signs and symptoms will be detailed, from the prodromal to the late stage of the disease. This chapter will also discuss how we define parkinsonism and Parkinson’s disease, with a detailed description of the different parkinsonian syndromes.

2. What Are the Other Parkinsonian Disorders?

Parkinsonism includes a number of different parkinsonian syndromes. This chapter will compare and contrast the symptoms of the most common parkinsonian syndromes and analyze how the symptoms of each syndrome impact the plan of care.

3. Diagnosis and Medical Management of Parkinsonian Syndromes

In this chapter, we demonstrate the motor examination of the client with parkinsonism as completed for diagnosis. This examination is then applied to case examples. The role of diagnostic modalities, including imaging and biomarkers, is examined, and medical management is discussed.

4. Outcome Measures for Parkinsonian Syndromes

In this chapter, we discuss the use of validated outcome measures recommended for use in clients with parkinsonian disorders. Case scenarios are utilized to demonstrate selection of outcome measures based on individual client presentation, including those with rare parkinsonian disorders.
