Working as an aide in the home care setting is both challenging and rewarding. The more an aide knows about the patient population being served and the specific health conditions patients face, the better prepared the aide is to give the best care possible. In this course on chronic kidney disease care, the aide will learn how the kidneys are designed to work, what happens when they do not function properly, and how to recognize when a patient needs help. The aide will also become familiar with issues to watch for related to chronic kidney disease. Next, the aide will learn how to safely provide personal cares to the patient while addressing the patient's specific needs. Documentation and reporting are important aspects of care the entire home care team needs to understand. In the final section of the course, the aide will learn proper documentation and reporting tips specific to patients with chronic kidney/renal disease.

1. Case Scenario and Course Overview

Approximately 15% of people in the United States have some degree of chronic kidney disease. It is important for the aide to understand that these numbers impact their patient population and to be knowledgeable about the other diseases/conditions that tend to accompany this disease.

2. Causes and Symptoms of Kidney Failure

Understanding how the kidneys are designed to work can help the aide understand the impact on a patient’s life when the kidneys do not work as designed. In this chapter, the aide will become familiar with the causes and symptoms of kidney failure in order apply practical perspective to the care provided to the patient.

3. Personal and Safety Care

As an aide providing care to any patient, it is important to follow general safety rules. When caring for a patient with chronic kidney disease, there are specific cares to keep in mind. In this chapter, we will discuss what these are and their importance.

4. Documentation and Reporting

Documentation and reporting keep the patient safe and ensure the entire home care team knows and understands what is going on with the patient. In this chapter, the aide will be given examples of issues specific to chronic kidney disease that need to be reported to the nursing supervisor.
