Clinicians working with children diagnosed with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders need a thorough assessment in order to determine a baseline and develop a plan of care that leads to improved function. The Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) framework provides the clinician with a problem solving approach, which incorporates the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY), with examination and evaluation.

1. ICF-CY

This chapter will provide an overview of the ICF-CY model, its dimensions, and role in the overall assessment and development of a plan of care.

2. Assessment: Examination, Evaluation, Tests, and Measures

This chapter focuses on the process of examination including pertinent history, observation of functional activities and limitations, multi-system integrities and impairments, specific system review for determination of single-system integrities and impairments.This chapter will present an overview of some of the most commonly used tests and measures that are relevant for children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. Clinicians will be able to choose appropriate tests and measures based on age and type of information needed.

3. Evaluation and Plan of Care

This chapter discusses the analysis of information and development of a plan of care including the NDT problem solving elements of this process. Prioritization of functional activity and participation limitations, and the multi and single system impairments which cause them will be discussed and linkages made to the development of a specific plan of care which includes measurable outcomes, frequency and duration, model of service delivery, and the role of family and other service professionals.

4. Client Example

In the concluding chapter of this course, Linda provides an in-depth example of a patient assessment with a child with cerebral palsy.

Intervention for children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders is a dynamic process that requires constant problem solving because of the variety and complexity of impairments present in these children. Neurodevelopmental Treatment, or NDT, provides a foundation and structure for intervention that includes ongoing problem solving and allows the clinician to utilize NDT handling strategies, as well as other techniques, to promote function and participation. This course will discuss the operational definition of NDT and provide examples of NDT intervention strategies including facilitation and elongation. A case presentation will also be used to illustrate the intervention process.
