Regardless of the practice setting, PTs, OTs, and SLPs are likely to encounter individuals experiencing behavioral health concerns. Behavioral health concerns impact all people, yet social and structural determinants of health result in increased likelihood and severity of behavioral health concerns in certain marginalized populations.

This course will provide an introductory knowledge of behavioral health concerns, the effect of social and structural determinants of health on behavioral health, and practical applications for behavioral health interventions across treatment settings. Specific populations addressed include at-risk youth, high-violence communities, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those experiencing substance use/abuse.

Dr. Quinn Tyminski currently serves as an instructor in the Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Tyminski earned her master's degree in occupational therapy from Washington University in 2012 and her Clinical Doctorate of Occupational Therapy in 2017 from Saint Louis University. 1. Behavioral Health Basics

This chapter provides a basic overview of behavioral health. The focus will be to guide practitioners in identifying those individuals at risk for behavioral health concerns.

2. Behavioral Health Disparities

This chapter will begin with a discussion of the current state of behavioral health in the United States, followed by a detailed explanation of social and structural determinants of health and their impact on the behavioral health of marginalized populations.

3. Specific Populations

This chapter will present several specific populations, including their unique behavioral health concerns, and tips for working with each population. Populations to be addressed include at-risk youth, high-violence communities, and individuals experiencing homelessness and/or substance use/abuse.

4. Behavioral Health Interventions

This chapter will provide intervention strategies for addressing behavioral health across treatment settings with case studies to demonstrate intervention ideas.

5. Question and Answer Session

This chapter is a question and answer session. In this chapter, Quinn Tyminski will answer questions that were submitted during the live webinar.
