Kristy Weissling

Kristy Weissling, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She received her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She received her professional doctorate in speech language pathology from Nova Southeastern University in 2006. She is the on-campus clinic coordinator and is one of four investigators on the NIDILRR Grant titled: Optimal Augmentative and Alternative Communication Technology for Individuals with Severe Communication Disabilities: Development of a Comprehensive Assessment Protocol. She has 25-years experience as an SLP. Her expertise is in the area of Augmentative and Alternative Communication for individuals with acquired neurogenic communication disorders. She has been an author of peer-reviewed journal articles, text book chapters, and national and international peer-reviewed presentations.

General Principles of AAC Assessment in Adult Populations
Currently many SLP clinicians do not understand the process of AAC assessment in adults with acquired communication disability. The authors of this presentation will seek to present an overview of the AAC assessment process as discussed in Buekelman and Miranda's participation model (2013). The model will be discussed as a means of creating a comprehensive treatment plan. Tools for the evaluation of skills in many areas of the participation model will be presented.

Adults with acquired communication disability can present with a variety of motor, cognitive, and linguistic issues that affect AAC assessment. The authors of this presentation will aim to identify the characteristics of a variety of adult acquired communication disorders. These characteristics will be used to drive the assessment process by determining which areas of the participation model may need more attention.

Although AAC interventions have been implemented by speech-language pathologists for multiple decades, some limitations exist in related to how best to provide AAC intervention services to adults with acquired communication impairments. This course will offer an overview of AAC intervention within a framework provided by the Beukleman and Miranda's Participation Model (2013). Evidence-based strategies and tools will be discussed throughout.
