Are you still using manual muscle testing as the only measure of muscle performance for your older adult patients? Are you still using endurance and number of minutes as the only measure of aerobic capacity for your older adult patients? This course will provide you with evidence-based strategies to strengthen your plan of care to address muscle performance and cardiovascular performance impairments in older adults. Emphasis will be placed on functional measures to guide both the design of, the progression of and the documentation of skilled therapeutic exercise programs and aerobic exercise programs for older adults.

1. Effects of Aging on the Musckuloskeletal System

As a person ages, the body’s musculoskeletal system undergoes natural changes. The rate and severity of the changes observed in our patients are important to consider when developing appropriate exercise programs. This chapter will review some of these changes associated with this system.

2. Effects of Exercise on the MS System

Exercise is an effective strategy to minimize the detrimental effects aging may have. While each individual is different, all older adults can review benefits from physical training. This chapter reviews some of the beneficial effects an appropriate exercise prescription can have on function.

3. Effects of Aging on the Cardiovascular System
