Robert Barnhart

PT, MS, ScDPT

Bob Barnhart is a Professor and the Director Physical Therapy program at Concordia University Wisconsin. He received his PT degree from Emory University (1979), his MS from the University of Tennessee Knoxville (1992), and his ScDPT from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (2006). He was a board certified pediatric physical therapist (PCS 1997, 2007), emeritus PCS (2017) and is NDT certified (1986). He has practiced in a variety of pediatric settings including school-based, early intervention, NICU, outpatient, acute care, and ICF/MR. He has authored or co-authored 8 peer review articles on pediatric rehabilitation topics.

This course will familiarize the therapist who works with individuals with developmental disabilities with common impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions which occur within the context of the normal aging process. The course begins by covering the ICF model and its application to aging issues for individuals with developmental delays. The typical characteristics of older people who have developmental disabilities will be discussed, as well as issues that may arise with the family and community. The course also covers musculoskeletal and other physiological changes that take place with aging. Special attention will be paid to considerations for Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy.
