Linda T. Miller
PT, DPT, CLT
Linda T. Miller, PT, DPT, CLT, served as the founder and clinical director of the Breast Cancer Physical Therapy Center in the Philadelphia area for over 20 years. She has over 300 hours of training in lymphedema management and has been an international student of lymphedema, including training in the UK, Italy, Spain, France, and Australia.
In April, 2010, she helped to establish The Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Program at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), the Sultanate of Oman's leading teaching hospital. She recently returned from the Middle East, where she was again invited to the SQUH to teach an advanced edema management course to an interdisciplinary team of health care providers.
Dr. Miller has also taken her edema management skills into the venue of sports medicine and orthopedics. Internationally recognized, Linda has published several articles and book chapters on post-operative breast cancer rehabilitation and breast cancer lymphedema. She has also trained hundreds of therapists and nurses in her comprehensive approach to edema management.

Management of Orthopedic Edemas
Following tissue injury or trauma, a normal physiologic response, including a transient localized edema, serves as a conduit for healing. This is a self-limiting response, and the development of chronic edema can impact further healing and function. The physiologic rationale of several edema management techniques will be discussed, including when it might be best to apply those techniques during the different phases of healing and presentations of edema.

This course will build upon the concepts introduced in Part One, including the pathology of breast cancer related edema and evidence on current treatment options. Identifying "transient edemas" and their treatment will be discussed. A subset of techniques, including manual lymphatic therapy, multi-layer bandaging, and intermittent pneumatic compression will be explored further and will be demonstrated. Emphasis will be placed on adapting treatment applications based on the presentation of the edema.

The details of the axillary dissection, including its purpose and impact on rehabilitation, will be examined, with a focus on post-operative cording and the potential resultant impact on scapular musculature. This course will also review current breast reconstruction procedures and their physical impact on recovery and function. Specific rehabilitation interventions and timelines will be presented.

It is estimated that 35-45% of the 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the US will develop treatment-related lymphedema. New diagnostic imaging and research on treatment techniques have given fresh insight into the possible factors that contribute to the edema process as well as the effective application of treatment options. The concept of "transient" vs. "persistent" edema will be introduced, including how etiology might impact treatment choices. Normal tissue microcirculation will be discussed as well as the pathophysiology of post-operative swelling. The most recent evidence on treatment techniques for breast-cancer-related edema, including outcomes, will be presented.

Treatment of Orthopedic Edemas: Physiologic Principles and Evidence-Based Techniques (Recorded Webinar)
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from standard MedBridge courses. The presence of soft tissue edema following orthopedic trauma, including injury and surgery, is a normal part of the initial healing process. However, prolonged swelling can lead to delayed wound and incisional healing, impaired joint range of motion (ROM), pain, and a delayed return to functional activities. This course will discuss traumatic edema formation, including the lymphatic and venous components of impaired tissue microcirculation. Sub-acute and chronic edemas can resolve more quickly with techniques that directly impact all components of edema formation and subcutaneous tissue changes. Treatment options that impact the venous and lymphatic systems and tissue interstitium will be discussed and demonstrated. These treatments include manual edema resorption techniques, modified compression bandaging, exercise with compression, and intermittent pneumatic compression.
