Jennifer Dodson graduated from the Florida International University occupational therapy program in 1998. She has been practicing outpatient rehabilitation in Jacksonville, Florida, ever since. In 2002, she was honored to be chosen as a fellow for the Evelyn Mackin Hand Therapy Fellowship at the Philadelphia Hand Center. She became a certified hand therapist in 2004. Part of the mission of the fellowship was to have the fellow bring learned knowledge to an underserved area. To help fulfill this mission, she created her own continuing education company, 3Kings Upper Extremity Specialists, specializing in upper extremity rehabilitation. 3Kings Upper Extremity Specialists brings quality continuing education courses to Jacksonville with the support of local hand/plastic surgeons and CHTs from around the country. Additional goals of starting her own company were to unite the CHTs and MDs in the Jacksonville area, to promote evidence-based practice by holding journal clubs, and to mentor area therapists.
Jennifer is an active member of the American Society of Hand Therapy and has served on the education council. She has been invited to lecture at local and national conferences around the US and Canada on various upper extremity topics. She currently works at UF Health Jacksonville, a level 1 academic trauma hospital. This allows her to practice in the two areas in which she is passionate: trauma and sports medicine. She previously served as a clinical hand specialist, where she developed the hand therapy program at the hospital. Through her years of practice, she has had the ability to start up hand therapy programs in various settings.

Shoulder pain is a common diagnosis for which therapists get referrals that limit a person's ability to use their arm, especially in overhead activities. This course will review considerations a therapist must address during a comprehensive evaluation of traumatic/complex elbow injuries. Therapists must also be knowledgeable about the types of complex elbow fracture diagnoses they may see in documentation or on therapy prescriptions, to determine what structures are involved. To begin the course, a review of the wound healing process as it relates to all structures involved will be presented. Following this, pertinent biomechanical studies will be reviewed that will impact decisions made by therapists through all phases of rehabilitation. Lastly, special considerations on emerging areas of practice will be discussed that can assist the therapist in developing a more client-centered treatment plan. In the literature, various terms are used to describe complex traumatic injuries. Due to this variability, the injuries in this course will address those that are a result of trauma that involves damage to two or more of the following structures: soft tissue (skin/fascia), bone, muscle, tendon, ligament, blood vessels, and peripheral nerve injuries.

After a comprehensive evaluation of the traumatic/complex elbow is performed, therapists must implement therapeutic interventions that are appropriate based on the stage of wound healing the patient is in. Therapists must also use clinical reason-ing to modify treatments according to patient factors and clinical presentation. Evidence-based decisions, along with critical reasoning throughout all stages of rehabilitation, are essential to maximize return to meaningful occupation. This course will provide treatment ideas based on the stages of wound healing and the patient's presentation, with emphasis on client-centered care. Therapeutic exercises, ADL training, manual interventions, and orthosis use are some areas that will be ad-dressed. Lastly, as therapists play a vital role in whether or not patients adhere to their home programs and post-operative restrictions, suggestions to increase patient adherence will be introduced to maximize functional outcomes and patient satisfaction.
