Presented by Jeffrey Fernandez, PT, DPT, OCS
Advanced Ankle and Foot Rehabilitation
Injuries to the ankle and foot are common in the pediatric population. The lack of skeletal maturity in younger children predisposes them to injuries different from those of an adult. These pediatric-specific conditions, as well as common examination techniques, will be reviewed, after which a framework for treatment will be discussed. Once the identified impairments have been addressed, determination of readiness for the pediatric patient to return to activity/sport will be discussed. This course seeks to increase the knowledge base and clinical reasoning of clinicians who treat pediatric patients with orthopedic conditions pertaining to the ankle and foot.
Persistent Pain in the Pediatric Athlete
Presented by Jeffrey Fernandez, PT, DPT, OCS
Persistent Pain in the Pediatric Athlete
Persistent pain, or pain that exceeds typical tissue healing time, is said to be prevalent in the pediatric population and may be underreported. There is limited knowledge of conservative management in the treatment of pediatric patients with persistent pain. This course will review nonmechanical factors that may affect a child's expression of pain. Additionally, this course will review how to appropriately assess pain in a pediatric patient and will discuss different treatment approaches, including graded motor imagery, graded exposure, and graded exercises. This course intends to increase the practitioner's clinical reasoning when working with a pediatric patient with persistent pain.
Assessing Pediatric and Adolescent Patients
Presented by Lauren Butler, PT, DPT, SCS and Jeffrey Fernandez, PT, DPT, OCS
Assessing Pediatric and Adolescent Patients
Knowledge of pediatric-specific assessment tools is lacking in the general orthopedic and sports rehabilitation clinician. This course will provide clinicians with an overview of clinically relevant tools to assess both structure and function in the pediatric and adolescent athlete. This course will cover the implementation of standardized assessment tools to evaluate structural alignment of the upper extremity, lower extremity, and trunk in the young athlete. It will also cover assessments of motor skill competency, strength, fitness, and resistance training readiness. This is an advanced course for physical therapists and athletic trainers working in outpatient centers or sports facilities.
