Erin Vigne

RN, MA

Erin Vigne, RN, MA, is a registered nurse, gerontologist, and certified health coach who has worked as an intervention nurse and research coordinator for the University of Maryland School of Nursing since 2011. As an intervention nurse working on a variety NIH-funded studies, she has worked in nursing homes and assisted living communities across Maryland. She has taught all levels of staff, as well as residents and their loved ones, about strategies to help older adults remain as functional and independent as possible and manage the challenging behaviors that often accompany dementia. Erin also writes weekly "email tidbits" for hundreds of study participants, which provide practical strategies and motivational tips to help participants achieve their goals. She enjoys health education, as well as public speaking on health and aging issues, and she loves spending time with older adults.

Nursing assistants play a key role in preventing the spread of infection in long-term care facilities. According to the Centers for Disease Control, infections are a major cause of hospitalization and death, with an estimated 380,000 residents dying of infections in long-term care facilities every year. Many of these infections can be prevented through simple steps, such as proper handwashing, use of personal protection equipment, and the appropriate handling of soiled linens. This course will describe how infection spreads in long-term care facilities, identify critical ways that nursing assistants can prevent the spread of infection, and demonstrate the techniques described.

According to the US Department of Labor, in 2008 the nursing home industry injury and illness incident rate was almost three times the incident rate of industry as a whole. This course will identify and discuss some of the most common safety hazards that nursing assistants face in long-term care facilities and offer strategies on how to decrease workplace safety hazards and minimize the risk of injury. Topics discussed include lifting and moving residents, falls, exposure to hazardous materials, and workplace violence. The course will also review the rights that employees have to a safe working environment and how to file a complaint with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
