Eric Hegedus
PT, DPT, PhD, MHSc, OCS
Dr. Eric J. Hegedus has had a notable 21-year career as a leader and innovator in physical therapist education, research, and clinical practice and is founding chair of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Department at High Point University. Dr. Hegedus also is founder and director of Targeted Enhanced Athletic Movement (TEAM), a community-based health and wellness program designed to improve athletic performance and prevent injury. In addition to his administrative duties, Professor Hegedus has directed and taught musculoskeletal practice management courses and has won the American Physical Therapy Association Orthopedic Section's James A. Gould teaching award. He is also a four-time winner of the Duke DPT Excellence in Teaching award and a three-time nominee for Duke Medical Center's prestigious Master Clinician Educator Award.
In addition to his love for teaching, Dr. Hegedus is a lifelong student with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Slippery Rock University, a Master of Health Science degree from Duke University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bucknell University, a board specialty in orthopedic physical therapy, and a specialty certification in strength and conditioning. Finally, Dr. Hegedus is a productive scholar with more than 40 peer-reviewed PubMed articles, three book chapters, and a textbook entitled Orthopedic Physical Examination Tests: An Evidence-Based Approach, now in its second edition and translated into five languages.

Clinical vignettes, or cases, represent the oldest and most familiar form of medical communication. A vignette presents a hypothetical situation to which learners respond, thereby revealing their perceptions, values, social norms, or impressions of events. This form of learning helps students recognize and interpret important data coming from the patient's problem, enabling students to arrive at a correct diagnosis and best treatment course. This course uses four different cases to discuss the most pertinent examination and treatment methods for each involved condition. Evidence-Based Examination of the Knee and Thigh: An Update
In this course, users will evaluate the impact and prevalence of knee and thigh dysfunction, understand the imperative patient history elements of a knee and thigh examination, and identify which patient history components are affiliated with knee and thigh pathology. The most common forms of self-report outcomes measures for the knee and thigh are presented and discussed. Viewers will also identify the most prevalent red flags encountered during the knee and thigh examination and differentiate the purposes of each screening test for problems meriting referral. An objective is to synthesize the importance of specific, meaningful clinical findings during the examination process and evaluate the benefit of palpation and manual muscle testing as part of a dedicated clinical examination. Current research is presented throughout the course to provide learners with the proper tools for evidence-based management of these patients. A Primer on Examination and Treatment Metrics
In this course, learners will be introduced to the Pain and Disability Drivers Management model and gain a greater understanding of the metrics that govern the examination and treatment processes. The examination process is based fundamentally on an understanding of epidemiology and measures such as prevalence and incidence. Examination metrics include measures like sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratios, applied with the goal of modifying pretest probability to get closer to some diagnosis (ruling in) and further away from others (ruling out). The goal of intervention is to produce superior patient outcomes. This course will provide a brief overview of outcome measures and discuss common treatment metrics, including p-value, effect size, and number needed to treat. In addition, prognostic factors will be discussed as they relate to outcomes and important measures like the minimal detectable change.
