Developing Your Medical Speech-Language Pathology Telehealth Service
This course will outline the key factors needed for the successful establishment of medical speech-language telehealth services. Guided by a case example, this course will support the learner in considering the service and client benefits of telehealth and the professional, legal, and financial requirements of service delivery. The value of service governance will be highlighted, along with key stakeholders needed to support telehealth service provision. Technology and equipment requirements will be outlined, along with staff and client training needs. Finally, telehealth service documentation and communication processes will be discussed, and a series of evaluation measures will be introduced to guide the review of clinical, service, and consumer outcomes. This course will be beneficial for speech-language pathologists and managers who are considering telehealth to enhance access to and delivery of clinical services.
Telehealth Delivery of Adult Medical Speech-Language Pathology Services
Presented by Clare Burns, BSpPath, PhD, CPSP and Elizabeth (Liz) Ward, BSpThy(Hons), Grad Cert Ed, PhD, FSPAA
Telehealth Delivery of Adult Medical Speech-Language Pathology Services
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the uptake of telehealth in speech-language pathology was slow, and clinicians often cite lack of awareness of the evidence as a barrier to uptake of telepractice. Since the pandemic, with more clinicians needing to use telepractice, there has been a strong desire for synthesized information about the evidence base for telehealth in the speech-language pathology field. This course will review the evolution of telehealth in the field of adult medical speech-language pathology services and detail the current evidence base for using telehealth in the management of language and communication disorders, voice and speech disorders, swallowing, and specialist caseloads. This course is applicable for speech-language pathologists and people in management roles supporting speech-language pathology services.
Conducting Adult Clinical Swallowing Examinations via Telehealth
Presented by Clare Burns, BSpPath, PhD, CPSP and Elizabeth (Liz) Ward, BSpThy(Hons), Grad Cert Ed, PhD, FSPAA
Conducting Adult Clinical Swallowing Examinations via Telehealth
Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, more clinicians have needed to use telepractice to support the management of dysphagia (swallowing impairment); however, many lack knowledge of the existing evidence for this practice model and are unaware of the ways to deliver this service. This course will present the context and drivers for using telehealth to deliver clinical swallowing examinations (CSEs) and will review the current evidence for this model of care. It will outline the key elements of the model, including the equipment setup and how to prepare the patient and personnel involved. There will also be discussion of the various ways you can use this model to conduct dysphagia assessments of patients within a facility (e.g., testing patients who are in isolation rooms via telehealth), patients located in other facilities (e.g., clients in a smaller hospital where no speech-language pathology services are available), and patients at home. Video demonstrations will be used to help the learner understand how to deliver this model of care. This course is applicable for speech-language pathologists, particularly those who provide adult dysphagia services; any person who may be involved as the support person in a telehealth CSE service; and people in management roles supporting speech-language pathology services.
