Dr. Carina Siracusa

PT, DPT, EdD, WCS, OnCS

Dr. Carina Siracusa has been a practicing physical therapist since she graduated from Ohio University with her doctorate in physical therapy in 2005. She has practiced in the areas of pediatric, neurologic, oncologic, and pelvic floor physical therapy in her tenure as a physical therapist. She currently works in the neurologic rehab department at OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio, seeing patients of all ages and abilities with pelvic floor dysfunction. She also serves as the oncology rehabilitation coordinator and the wheelchair clinic coordinator in this hospital system. She has been teaching for the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy since 2010 in the pelvic health series. She has also taught as adjunct clinical faculty at several universities. She has given multiple presentations all over the world on the topics of neurologic and pediatric pelvic health. She also teaches several two-day courses on the subjects of pediatric and neurologic pelvic health.

Patients who are undergoing treatment for GI and colorectal cancers have a variety of unique symptoms and side effects from their cancer treatment. Some of these issues tend to be general musculoskeletal issues, and others are more focused toward pelvic floor disorders. Referrals to other disciplines will also be discussed in the context of providing full patient care. While this course will focus on musculoskeletal side effects, speech and occupational therapy issues will also be discussed in the larger context of treatment planning. Patients with neurologic dysfunction can present with a variety of bowel and bladder issues that are unique to this patient population. Many pelvic floor therapists may not be aware of how each neurologic issue can affect the bowel and bladder. This course will explore the central nervous system and how disorders can create bowel, bladder, and pelvic floor issues in a patient. Evaluation strategies, tests, and measures will be discussed and demonstrated. Treatment strategies will be discussed and demonstrated with long-term treatment plans. Participants will also gain knowledge on appropriate education needed in this population to improve health literacy as well as bowel and bladder habits.

Pediatric pelvic health covers patients from birth through 18 years old. While there is a specific treatment algorithm for patients under the age of 13, there are several diagnoses that are unique to those between the ages of 13 and 18. This course will cover mainly female adolescent pelvic health diagnoses and the different techniques needed for pelvic health professionals to treat this special population. Learners will understand the complexities of each diagnosis and design an appropriate evaluation and treatment program for these patients. Also, because health literacy is so important for this population, the course will discuss the importance of improving educational offerings for the adolescent with pelvic health disorders. This course will also briefly discuss the treatment of neurologically involved adolescents with pelvic floor issues.

Advanced evaluation and treatment strategies will be presented along with education for families and patients about prognosis and treatment. In this course, the participant will learn the basics of pelvic floor muscle development and bowel and bladder physiology that may impact children. The role of posture in pelvic floor function will be discussed to help the practitioner gain a deeper understanding of why children have incontinence and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Gross motor milestones and their effects on pelvic floor development will be explored to help therapists create a multifaceted treatment program for the typically developing child with bowel and bladder dysfunction. Toilet training to help prevent bowel and bladder dysfunction for the typically developing child will be discussed in depth. Finally, common issues such as pediatric incontinence and constipation will be explored to allow the practitioner to understand the differences between treating pelvic floor dysfunction in children versus in adults. At the end of the course, the learner should have a solid foundational knowledge of the issues that may affect the pediatric client with bowel and bladder dysfunction.
This course is appropriate for PTs, OTs, and nurses treating children in an acute or outpatient environment.

In this course, the learner will gain knowledge of the bowel and bladder issues that can plague the neurologically involved child. Common diagnoses discussed include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorders. Participants will be able to understand how each of these neurologic issues affects the bowel, bladder, and toilet training. Treatment including exercise strategies, education, and equipment will be discussed. At the end of the course, participants should be able to set realistic expectations for continence for their patients. They will also be able to assess for further equipment needs and positioning strategies for their nonambulatory patients. Participants will have a greater understanding of the bowel and bladder needs for this special population and should be able to create treatment plans to address these issues.
This course is appropriate for PTs, OTs, and RNs treating children in an acute or outpatient environment.
