Barbara Pisano Messing is a practicing speech pathologist with 36 years of clinical and administrative experience. Dr. Messing was the administrative-clinical director of the Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head and Neck Center, Head and Neck Surgery, and Johns Hopkins Voice Center at GBMC in Baltimore, Maryland, for 22 years. She is recognized as a clinical specialist in head and neck rehabilitation and a board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders. She has published many peer-reviewed manuscripts and several book chapters. She lectures nationally and internationally on dysphagia, esophageal disorders, and clinical pathways and outcomes in head and neck cancer. Her clinical and research interests are in the area of head and neck cancer rehabilitation, dysphagia, and voice disorders. She received her doctorate at the University of Queensland, focusing her research on dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients. She completed her PhD program at the University of Queensland in 2020, and she received the Dean's Award for Outstanding Higher Degree by Research Theses for her thesis, entitled An Examination of Functional Outcomes Following Head and Neck Cancer and Enhancing New Pathways of Care.

This course seeks to fill a knowledge gap in the advanced instruction of head and neck cancer (HNC) management. This lecture will identify current surgical treatment options for HNC patients to improve early and long-term outcomes and overall survival. Specifically, this course provides instruction on the impact of surgery and reconstruction on communication and swallowing in head and neck cancer patients post surgery.
