Ashley E. Parish

Ashley Parish is an ABPTS board-certified cardiovascular and pulmonary clinical specialist in physical therapy with more than a decade of experience in the intensive care unit setting. She obtained both her bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her passion is intensive-care-unit-based services for the cardiovascular and pulmonary pediatric population. Parish has experience teaching cardiovascular and pulmonary concepts at the undergraduate, pre-professional, and doctoral level at multiple institutions. Additionally, she has served in leadership roles for the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, as well as for the Alabama Physical Therapy Association. She hopes to use her passion and expertise to expand cardiovascular and pulmonary pediatric protocols and research.

This is an advanced course for PTs and OTs that is the first in a three-part series about pediatric cardiovascular and pulmonary therapy. This specific course focuses on fetal development of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Emphasis will be placed on how to perform a cardiovascular and pulmonary assessment of infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents that are typically developing. Assessment will include frequently seen tests and measures, such as capillary refill, 6-Minute Walk Test, and pulmonary function testing. This material will provide the background needed to understand abnormalities of the heart and lungs and understand how to assess children with certain cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. Material in this course is applicable to the acute care, outpatient, and early intervention settings.

Understanding the typical development of the pediatric heart is essential prior to taking this course. Content will begin with interpretation of diagnostic testing followed by an in-depth look at the most commonly seen cardiovascular conditions. Surgical and medical interventions for each condition will be examined. Equipment and medication will be explored to the extent that it impacts physical therapy practice. The course will end with how to select appropriate interventions for specific age ranges and conditions. Material in this course is targeted toward PTs and OTs in the acute care, outpatient, and early intervention settings.

This course will focus on conditions and disorders that impact the pediatric pulmonary system. It is vital to understand typical pulmonary development prior to the start of this course. Material will begin with diagnostic tests and measures and move into commonly seen pediatric pulmonary conditions. Conditions will be discussed based on age range from infant to adolescent. Emphasis will then be given to pulmonary equipment, including oxygen devices commonly seen in various practice settings in pediatrics, and medications and implications for physical therapy plan of care will be analyzed. The course will end with appropriate development of interventions for this population.
