Vicky Saliba Johnson

PT, FFFMT, FAAOMPT

Vicky Saliba Johnson, PT, FFFMT, FAAOMPT graduated in 1977 from the Medical College of Georgia with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy. She then completed the six-month PNF training program at Kaiser Rehabilitation Center in Vallejo, CA, under the direction of Maggie Knott, PT. Saliba Johnson's primary interests and studies in orthopedic manual therapy have been in movement reeducation and exercise prescription. She founded the Institute of Physical Art with Gregg Johnson in 1978 and began teaching PNF nationwide. In 1986 she developed and began teaching Back Education and Training through the IPA. She has co-authored several chapters, spoken at many APTA sponsored events, and lectured at the 1994 FOMT Convention. She has studied many manual therapy approaches including Maitland, Paris, Grimsby, McKenzie, and Rocabado.

Her clinical practice focuses on Back Education and Training with an emphasis on movement rehabilitation, both on an individual and corporate level. Saliba Johnson is co-owner of Johnson and Johnson Physical Therapy in Steamboat, CO. She previously was co-owner and co-director of Preventative and Rehabilitative Physical Therapy, The Back Clinic and Resource Center, and Marin Spine and Orthopedic Center in Marin, CA. In addition to her teaching and business administration responsibilities, Saliba Johnson co-directs the Functional Manual Therapy Certification program and serves as faculty for the FMT Fellowship.

How does an integrated systems approach facilitate resolution of pain, optimum recovery, and maximum functional potential? Gregory S. Johnson and Vicky Saliba Johnson, founders of the Institute of Physical Art and co-developers of Functional Manual Therapy(R) (FMT), answer this question by defining and applying the mechanical capacity, neuromuscular function, and motor control pillars of FMT to real world therapy scenarios. This course begins with a short introduction to FMT by Vicky Johnson. Gregg and Vicky then discuss the underlying science and rationale behind each pillar and the integrated assessment and treatment progression. The course then instructs the participant in the purpose and utilization of two IPA Functional Tests, the Vertical Compression Test and the Elbow Flexion Test. The information in this course will prepare the participant to better extrapolate clinical reasoning and skills from the following patient demonstration courses and follow the seamless progression, integrating the three FMT pillars into an interdependent regional approach of patient care.

This course is part of a six-part series with Gregg and Vicky Johnson, which is designed to provide the participant with a working understanding of the FMT system of patient care through live patient demonstrations and lectures to support the clinical reasoning behind the progression of treatment and skills used:

  • Functional Manual Therapy(R): A Comprehensive Patient Management System.
  • Understanding the Interconnectivity of the Body's Connective Tissues and Articulations and Their Interdependency for Efficient Function - Live patient assessment and treatment and mechanical components of neck and low back pain by Gregory S. Johnson.
  • Neuromuscular Function: Mastering the Specificity of Manual Neuromuscular Facilitation - Live patient demonstrations for the assessment and facilitation of CoreFirst(R) postural and movement strategies and the integrated use of specific manual neuromuscular facilitation to address ROM, Initiation, and strength by Vicky Saliba Johnson and Gregory Johnson.
  • Motor Control: Principles of CoreFirst(R) Strategies for Posture and Movement - Live patient demonstration utilizing CoreFirst(R) strategies for posture and movement to promote an Automatic Core Engagement (ACE) by Vicky Saliba Johnson.
  • The Functional Manual Therapy(R) Approach to the Knee - Live patient assessment and treatment of a knee patient by Gregory S. Johnson.
  • The Functional Manual Therapy(R) Approach to the Pelvic Girdle - Live patient assessment and treatment of a low back patient by Gregory S. Johnson.

This course features three live patient demonstrations focusing on the assessment and facilitation of CoreFirst(R) postural and movement strategies and the impact of mechanical capacity on neuromuscular function. Vicky Saliba Johnson demonstrates specific manual techniques for assessing end feel, neuromuscular activation, and automatic core engagement. Gregory S. Johnson demonstrates treatment of mechanical limitations in the lumbar spine to improve alignment and neuromuscular function.

In this course, Vicky Saliba Johnson works with Kristin (a patient experiencing difficulties with her core strength following an injury) and assesses her Automatic Core Engagement and alignment using the Functional Tests of Vertical Compression and Elbow Flexion Tests. The demonstration progresses from sitting training to active sitting and weight acceptance to standing alignment training. The pre and post test demonstrate the effectiveness of the motor control training.
