This course outlines the role of rehabilitation professionals in assessing and treating enuresis. The course begins by describing the prevalence and effects of enuresis, including comorbidities and the consequences for children. The course then explains the process for assessing for enuresis via urolog and implementing behavior modification, charting, and conditioning to address the problem. Without an in-depth understanding of non-invasive tools available to therapists, it is not possible to effectively practice pediatric pelvic floor rehabilitation. This course, with Dawn Sandalcidi, covers tools and strategies for evaluating pelvic floor function in children. Non-invasive tools covered include Bowel-Bladder Diaries, Uroflow measurements, and Ultrasound. Invasive tools include DMSA Renal Scan, Cystometry, and Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG). How can therapists effectively teach children to execute subtle muscle contractions to perform proper toileting technique? One answer is the emerging practice of biofeedback or technique in which a normally unconscious physiological process is presented to a patient and therapist as a visual, auditory or tactile signal. This course, with Dawn Sandalcidi, describes forms of biofeedback that are available in a clinical setting, most prominently Surface Electromyography SEMG, and describes specific biofeedback treatment progressions, as well as the limitations of biofeedback.
