This course will teach you how to design an effective shoulder rehabilitation program based on current clinical evidence and scientific research. The anatomy and biomechanics of the glenohumeral joint will be reviewed from an evidence-based perspective, including how to understand and recognize the pathomechanics of various shoulder injuries. The influence of shoulder joint biomechanics and the importance of a thorough clinical exam will be emphasized. We will also discuss the importance of the subjective examination to complement the clinical exam. From all of this, the PT, ATC, PTA, or OT will be able to design an appropriate rehabilitation program for the shoulder patient.

1. Relevant Anatomy Overview

This chapter includes a brief overview of the functional anatomy of the shoulder complex. It is critical that the clinician fully grasp the anatomical structures and how they apply to the rehabilitation concepts later presented.

2. Glenohumeral Joint Stability

This chapter highlights the concepts of static and dynamic stability that aid in normal glenohumeral function. Muscle force couples are also presented to educate the clinician on what structures may be affected when a patient presents with a shoulder injury.

3. Biomechanics Overview

This chapter will discuss biomechanics and how they apply to the evaluation of a patient presenting with a shoulder injury. The fundamentals of a good shoulder exam are presented to aid the clinician in decision-making.

4. Creating an Evidence-Based Rehab Program

This chapter discusses the relevant research that the clinician may use when constructing a rehabilitation program for shoulder patients. Understanding and interpreting the best available evidence aids the clinician in developing a safe and effective rehab program.

5. Biomechanics and Implementation of Shoulder Rehabilitation

This chapter discusses the specific exercises that are recommended based on the available research and the instructor’s experience as a sports physical therapist. A historical perspective of all of the research that culminates in a shoulder rehabilitation program can aid the clinician and help guide the patient’s plan of care. The ultimate goal is to create the safest and most effective rehabilitation program.
