The presence of soft tissue edema following orthopedic trauma, including injury and surgery, is a normal part of the initial healing process. However, prolonged swelling can lead to delayed wound and incisional healing, impaired joint range of motion (ROM), pain, and a delayed return to functional activities. This course will discuss traumatic edema formation, including the lymphatic and venous components of impaired tissue microcirculation. Treatment options that impact the venous and lymphatic systems and tissue interstitium will be discussed and demonstrated. These treatments include manual edema resorption techniques, modified compression bandaging, exercise with compression, and intermittent pneumatic compression.
