This course will cover the treatment of atypical breathing patterns utilizing several strategies. Positioning relative to breathing will be explained. The impact of gravity will be discussed relative to the treatment of atypical breathing. Several techniques utilizing towel rolls, movement, and manual techniques will be presented and demonstrated. These techniques will primarily involve mobilization of the rib cage.

Deanna M. Wanzek, PT, PCS, CKTI, CLT, graduated from the Mayo Foundation School of Physical Therapy in 1974. Although she has specialized in pediatrics for the past forty years, she does treat across the life span. DeDe utilizes a holistic approach to evaluation and treatment. 1. Treatment Techniques Using Voice and Positioning

This chapter will present techniques utilizing voicing and positioning. These techniques will discuss how to use gravity to assist or resist chest expansion.

2. Mobilization of the Rib Cage Using a Towel Roll

This chapter will present techniques to mobilize the rib cage. The importance of how to construct the towel roll will be discussed relative to the impairment. Specific placement of the towel roll relative to the impairment will also be explained.

3. Mobilization of the Rib Cage Using Movement Techniques

This chapter will present techniques that are applicable across the life span. The techniques include hands-on techniques as well as self-initiated techniques. The impairment relative to the technique presented will also be explained.

4. Mobilization of the Rib Cage Using Manual Techniques

This chapter will present manual techniques for mobilization of the individual rib segments, massage of the intercostal muscles, and mobilization of the quadratus lumborum. The impairment relative to the technique presented will also be explained. Precautions relative to each technique will also be discussed.
