Various theories and models related to rehabilitation nursing that can guide practice and promote positive patient outcomes are presented in this course. Major nursing theories, as well as those from other disciplines (including developmental, behavioral, cognitive, and personality theories), will be addressed. The ARN Professional Nursing Practice Competency Model, developed by a team of experts to help guide nursing practice in the specialty of rehabilitation, is briefly introduced. 1. Introduction to Nursing Theories and Models

Theories provide a blueprint or framework from which to view practice. Such theories and associated models can be helpful in understanding patient behavior and give guidance in developing appropriate nursing interventions. In this chapter, some major nursing theories will be summarized, including those from King, Roy, Rogers, Neuman, and Orem.

2. Models Related to Rehabilitation Nursing

Nursing theories alone do not explain the wide range of human behavior and development seen in diverse groups, so examining the contributions of other disciplines can add to the nurse’s knowledge. This chapter introduces the model set forth by the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) for professional rehabilitation nursing competency. The four domains and associated competencies are mentioned within three levels of proficiency (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). Practical examples of application of the model are provided. Related theories in areas of behavior, cognition, social learning, and psychology are also presented to promote better comprehensive assessment in rehabilitation.
