The multilayered anatomy of the hip, as well as its close proximity to complex regions such as the lumbar spine and SI joint, can create a challenge for the orthopedic and sports clinician when assessing and diagnosing hip related pathologies. This course will break down the anatomy of the hip layer by layer with a focus on the critical structures relevant to physical therapy. We will then guide you through an organized examination of the hip and finally review radiographic and other advanced diagnostic imaging utilized in the evaluation of hip pathologies. Upon completion of this course, the participant should feel confident in their foundational knowledge of the hip anatomy, be able to perform a well organized exam of the hip, and understand the common findings and terminology associated with imaging of the hip.

1. Basic Structure and Function

In this first chapter, Dr. Mike Voight introduces participants to the structure and function of the hip, describing anatomical structures and biomechanical factors as they pertain to hip pathology. Special emphasis is placed on the discussion of common differential diagnosis for pain around the hip.

2. Clinical Examination of the Hip

In this chapter, Dr. Voight describes the diagnostic process for identifying and classifying hip injuries, and presents an evidence-based systematic approach to examine the hip. Participants will receive an overview of how an organized physical examination consisting of pertinent tests and measures can be used to identify hip pathology, and will come to understand evidence-based functional assessment and pain provocation maneuvers that may be implemented to evaluate potential hip pathology.

3. Radiologic Examination of the Hip

Radiology as an evaluative tool has proven to be very effective for the examination of the hip. Learn about the routine radiographic tools and evaluation approaches utilized in the diagnostic process. Upon completion of the chapter, participants will be able to describe the most common imaging projections and radiologic observations utilized in the diagnostic process, as well as describe other common imaging studies that are implemented in more advanced diagnostic cases.
