How do therapists ensure children are positioned so that they can learn and participate optimally at school? This course will present options that therapists can use with children to enable them to participate to the best of their abilities. These options include seating systems within a mobility base or positioning equipment within the classroom environment. Through presentation, demonstration, and discussion the participant will learn how to properly recommend and fit a variety of seating and positioning systems appropriate for the school aged child.

1. Principles of Seating

This chapter will discuss the details of proper seating and positioning. Therapists will learn the necessary components of a seating assessment and how to synthesize information into a comprehensive seating and mobility plan of care.

2. Product Options

This chapter will introduce the products generally available to assist in maintaining posture within positioning and seating equipment. Products will include options for back cushions and seat cushions.

3. Postural Support Devices

This chapter will address the postural support devices that can be included into a seating system to achieve optimal positioning. Although the cushions are important base for pressure relief and posture, the postural support device help to support and maintain the skeletal system appropriately within the seating system.
