How can the sports therapist effectively and safely manage sports medicine? This course by Dr. Todd Arnold provides a detailed overview of the body's response to medication. Dr. Arnold first introduces the intimate relationship of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to athletic medicines and then explores how a drug interacts and passes through the athlete. Common athletic medicines are then explored in-depth, including appropriate usage and management. Common athletic skin conditions are covered alongside important information on return-to-play guidelines and other legal considerations for medication management. 1. Asthma and Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm

Multiple medications are used for both asthma and EIB. This chapter will review the appropriate use of those medications, which is a critical item for clinicians caring for athletes.

2. Antidepressants

Chapter 2 is a brief exploration of commonly prescribed types of antidepressants. This is a category of medications that are commonly used in the athletic population with a moderate list of side effects that must be recognized. This chapter builds on the understanding of pharmacodynamics.

3. Athletic Skin Infections

It is incredibly important for the sports therapist to know and understand treatments for skin infections frequently seen in athletes and the typical medications used. Another important component of this lecture covers when athletes can return to play and how legal considerations play a role in the management of athletic medicines.

4. Legal Issues

Chapter 4 will cover several legal issues that are directly related to medications. Applying these to many clinical settings is important for the sports clinician. Join Dr. Todd Arnold and Dr. Katie Whetstone as they discuss common questions in pharmacology for the sports therapist. Dr. Arnold provides detailed answers and discussion on such questions as what medicine athletes should take for an acute injury.
