In this course, Dr. Montgomery provides a basic review of the development of the central nervous system (CNS) with emphasis on pathology leading to a variety of developmental disabilities. In addition, she outlines critical elements to enhance brain plasticity in children. The important role of apoptosis in brain development is explored, and Neuronal Group Selection Theory as related to the development of motor skills is discussed.

Patricia C. Montgomery, PhD, PT, FAPTA, received a BS degree in physical therapy from the University of Oklahoma and an MA in Educational Psychology and PhD in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota. 1. Neurogenesis, Apoptosis, Neuronal Group Selection Theory

This chapter provides a basic review of development of the central nervous system (CNS) with emphasis on pathology leading to a variety of developmental disabilities. The important role of apoptosis (cell death) in brain development is described, and Neuronal Group Selection Theory as related to the development of motor skills is discussed.

2. Hydrocephalous Case Studies

Chapter two consists of case studies of two children with a diagnosis of hydrocephalus. Impairments affecting motor development are compared and relevant treatment strategies suggested.

3. Myelination and Autism Disorders

This chapter reviews the process and importance of myelination in the CNS and the role of corticostriatal connections for motor and cognitive learning. Brain imaging studies and proposed etiologies for autism are described, and general high-risk factors for the developing CNS are summarized.
