Patients come into rehabilitation with more than just their admitting diagnosis - they bring co-morbidities, medication lists, superimposed issues, and pre-existing disabling conditions. This course reviews potential situations that the rehabilitation nurse may encounter, and thus will help the nurse ready him/herself to be aware of potential complications unrelated to the cause of admission to the rehabilitation unit, but which may impact patient outcomes.

1. Sneaky Situations: Conditions That May Accompany Your Patient Into Rehabilitation

This chapter reviews the conditions and situations that accompany a patient into rehabilitation, from co-morbidities to preexisting disabling conditions. Conditions that may affect progress in rehabilitation and conditions that may lead to emergency situations will be compared so that the nurse may develop an understanding of “red flags” to watch for on the nursing unit.
