The course is a review and update on new neuroscience and applicable cognitive-communication research for addressing impairments associated with right-hemisphere stroke. The course will emphasize research on those impairments and interventions that cross therapeutic disciplines. The areas reviewed include executive functions, such as strategic attention, working memory, error monitoring, and self-regulation. The content also focuses on the impact of hemispatial neglect on activities of daily living as well as literacy and social communication skills.

1. Current Research on Attentional and Communication Impairments Associated With Right-Hemisphere Stroke

Chapter 1 provides an update of new research on right-hemisphere organization for attention and left hemispatial neglect. It also covers impairments associated with right-hemisphere stroke that affect communication.

2. Current Research on Executive Function Impairment Associated With Right-Hemisphere Stroke

Chapter 2 provides an overview of right-hemisphere organization for social cognition and executive functions, including issues with theory of mind (ToM), error monitoring, self-regulation, and organization. It also covers communication disorders, including pragmatic and social communication problems. These regulatory and social communication skills are essential for personal and avocational independence.

3. Review of Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches for Visuospatial Neglect After Right-Hemisphere Stroke

Chapter 3 covers interdisciplinary evidence-based interventions, including visual scanning therapy (VST), computerized VST, and action observation. These interventions have been shown to enhance communication skills and independence in activities of daily living.
