Hip Fracture Part D: Acute Care and Long Term Management

This continuing education course instructs in the specific skills that physical therapists and occupational therapists must consider in the skilled nursing facility when working with a patient who has had a hip fracture. Evaluation and intervention techniques will be demonstrated or discussed with emphasis on determination of the patient’s prior level of function, reason for experiencing hip fracture (dizziness, weakness, pain, etc.), and knowledge of patient’s environment upon discharge. The progression from post-surgical early mobility and ADL task instruction, to acute care IADL instruction is demonstrated and discussed with suggestions for appropriate levels of intervention. The therapist will learn how to instruct the patient in use of common assistive devices such as sock aids, reachers, and leg lifters. Meet Your Instructors

  • Brooke Gentry, MS, OTR/L

    Brooke graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science from Western Kentucky University and a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Milligan College. She works as an acute care occupational therapist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Brooke has worked on the orthopedic, geriatric and medicine floors. She currently covers the surgical ICU. She is a member of The American Occupational Therapy Association. Brooke has been apart of the Vanderbilt Acute Care Rehab Team since September 2012. In her free time she enjoys running and spending time with her husband and black lab.

  • Ashley Hendricks, OTR/L

    Ashley Hendricks, OTR/L is a practicing Occupational Therapist with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern Indiana. She has been certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). She is a licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of Tennessee and a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Since 2012, she has worked at Life Care Centers of America at Hickory Woods (LCCAHW), Antioch, TN, which is a 128 bed, skilled nursing facility (SNF). Ms. Hendricks evaluates patients, develops treatment plans for geriatric patients, implements interventions to achieve short and long-term goals, completes home evaluations, and plans discharge for safe transitions. She supervises Occupational Therapy Assistants and serves as a Clinical Instructor for Level II students.

  • Priscilla Sanders, PT, DPT

    Priscilla Sanders, PT, DPT, is a licensed physical therapist with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She has been certified by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), and is a licensed physical therapist in the state of Tennessee. Ms. Sanders has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) since 2005, and has received her Vestibular Rehabilitation Competency and Certified Clinical Instructor certifications from the organization. Since 2007, she has worked at Life Care Centers of America, evaluating and treating patients with various diagnoses in long term care, skilled nursing, and outpatient therapy settings. Among her many talents, Ms. Sanders provides supervision to PTAs, cross trains in various management duties, and serves as a clinical instructor for graduate PT students.
