Wounds are unfortunately very common, particularly in older patients. Patients with wounds are at greater risk of infection, which can lead to other serious health problems. As a home health aide, you may be asked to provide personal care to patients who have wounds. This course provides a simple definition of wounds, defines types of wound healing and factors that impact wound healing, and discusses the role the aide plays in supporting wound healing. Documentation and reporting strategies are demonstrated related to changes in the skin that the aide may recognize.

1. Case Scenario and Course Overview

In this chapter, we will introduce the topics to be covered and learning objectives for this course. An example of a patient situation you may encounter in your work with patients will be presented. This scenario will be referenced throughout the course.

2. Wound Types and Factors That Affect Healing

This chapter will define the term “wound” and provide descriptions of two types of wound healing. Factors that impact how quickly a wound can heal will also be presented. The patient situation presented at the beginning of the course will be used to connect the topics discussed in this chapter to what an aide may experience while providing care to a patient with a wound.

3. Providing Safe and Effective Wound Care

The aide must take special precautions when providing personal care to patients with wounds. This chapter discusses home health aide goals for providing care for patients with wounds, and the personal care considerations to watch for, such as signs and symptoms that may indicate infection or changes in the wound. The importance of utilizing infection prevention and control strategies while providing personal care is discussed.

4. Documentation and Reporting

The home health aide must report and document any changes in the patient’s condition that are observed during a visit. This chapter provides a demonstration of an aide observing important factors that may impact the patient's wound healing and reporting these changes to her supervisor.
