1. Case Scenario and Course Overview

In this chapter, we will introduce the topics to be covered and learning objectives for this course. A patient situation you may encounter in your work with patients will be presented.

2. Causes and Symptoms of Pressure Injuries

This chapter will define the term “pressure injury” and discuss several causes and risk factors that may lead to pressure injuries. Pressure injury stages will be presented, with a discussion of characteristics seen at each stage.

3. Goals of Care

The aide must take special precautions when providing personal care to patients with pressure injuries. This chapter discusses home health aide goals for providing care for patients with pressure injuries, and identifies important personal care considerations, such as care when transferring or repositioning a patient. A patient scenario will be provided to demonstrate these important concepts.

4. Documentation and Reporting

The home health aide plays an important role as a member of the interdisciplinary team by identifying new areas of concern to assist in pressure injury reduction. The home health aide must report and document any changes in the patient’s condition that are observed during a visit. This chapter discusses this important role and provides a demonstration of an aide observing areas of concern that may lead to a pressure injury for her patient, and reporting these changes to her supervisor.
