Children with speech and resonance disorders (hypernasality, hyponasality, and cul-de-sac resonance) and/or nasal emission present challenges for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in all settings. This course is designed to provide current, practical information for SLPs who frequently or occasionally see clients with speech/resonance disorders and/or nasal emission due to cleft palate, non-cleft velopharyngeal dysfunction, or other causes.
This course will cover fast, efficient, effective methods for the perceptual assessment of speech and resonance disorders, particularly those associated with velopharyngeal dysfunction. Methods for conducting an intraoral examination will be explained, and important findings will be shown. The use of instrumental assessments, such as nasometry, videofluoroscopy, and nasopharyngoscopy will be described, and videos will be shown for illustration.

1. Perceptual Evaluation

Speech-language pathologists need to know how to evaluate children with speech/resonance disorders and suspected velopharyngeal dysfunction. This chapter covers methods for evaluation of speech and resonance that are fast, easy, and very reliable in determining an accurate diagnosis.

2. Intraoral Evaluation

Speech-language pathologists need to recognize oral abnormalities that can affect speech and/or resonance. This chapter covers effective methods for conducting an oral examination. Examples of common oral and dental abnormalities will be shown, and their effect on speech and/or resonance will be discussed.

3. Instrumental Assessment

There are various instrumental procedures that can augment the perceptual evaluation of resonance and velopharyngeal function. This chapter will cover the use of nasometry, videofluoroscopy, and nasopharyngoscopy, and video examples will be given.
