This is the fifth in a six-part series on Nutrition and Exercise in the aging population, specifically with cardiopulmonary disease management. The focus is interdisciplinary, looking specifically at the aging process, and deals with the changing perspectives concerning nutrition and exercise's relationship to health, diseases and aging. This course will focus on exercise management and proper nutritional intake in order to encourage a balanced diet, activity, and exercise as a way of preventing and/or stalling diseases. The role of exercise in health maintenance is an important component of this course series. Exercise prescription and integration with nutritional needs are presented. Preventive interventions and screening for problems to prevent disability are discussed.

1. COPD: Diet & Exercise in Disease Management

This chapter expands on the series of Nutrition and Exercise in the elderly exploring specific diseases and the impact of exercise and diet on prevention and management of multiple diseases. Diet and exercise both have been found to be correlated with Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes mellitus, congestive heart and coronary artery diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Parkinson’s and obesity, to name a few. The principles of specific nutirents and diets, nutritional wisdom and the basics in previous sections of this course series will be reviewed in greater detail.
