Fifty-four million Americans are living with or at-risk of osteoporosis and low bone mass, resulting in two million fractures every year. Osteoporosis is defined as a skeletal disorder characterized by compromised bone strength leading to an increased risk of fracture. This definition emphasizes the role of bone strength as a key to understanding fracture risk; one in two women and up to one in four men over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime. This course, the second in a three-part series presented by Dr. Kathryn Brewer, focuses on a comprehensive care plan for the older adult with osteoporosis.

Kathryn Brewer, PT, DPT, MEd, Geriatric Clinical Specialist Emeritus

Dr. Brewer graduated with her degree in physical therapy from The Ohio State University and received her Master of Education degree from the University of Cincinnati. 1. Developing a Plan of Care

In the first chapter of this course, Dr. Brewer begins by defining appropriate education, exercise dosage, and progression of interventions for effective outcomes. Participants will also explore secondary prevention, focusing primarily on education and exercise prescription, and tertiary preventions, addressing functional deficits, acute symptoms, and other factors.

2. Intervention: Patient Education

In Chapter Two, participants will learn to read and interpret bone mineral density (BMD) scores. Dr. Brewer reviews principles of bone maintenance, including nutritional components, pharmaceutical contributions, and principles of exercise.

3. Intervention: Posture Correction and Support

Chapter Three address interventions strategies for prevention of further decline. Dr. Brewer addresses modifiable postural changes and adaptations for structural abnormalities.

4. Intervention: Body Mechanics and Safe Movement

In Chapter Four, participants will learn the essential applications of movement patterns, spinal loading, and safe movement.
