The purpose of this course is to explain the process for developing an occupational therapy intervention plan within school-based settings. The course uses the American Occupational Therapy Association guidelines to describe the intervention planning process and identify the components of an occupational therapy intervention plan. The course will also discuss the differences between an individualized education program (IEP) and an occupational therapy intervention plan and provide strategies for developing and documenting intervention plans.
Dottie Handley-More, MS, OTR/L, is an occupational therapist with 30 years of experience in the school-based practice. She has published and presented on a variety of topics including leadership, best practices, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, occupational therapy decision-making, pediatric assessment, and consultation and collaboration. Ms. Handley-More edits the "Collaboration and Connections" column for the Journal of Occupational Therapy, Schools, and Early Intervention and is Co-Chair of Occupational Therapists in Schools for the Washington Occupational Therapy Association. She was chair of AOTA’s Early Intervention and Schools Special Interest Section, where she also served as liaison to the Commission on Practice.
This chapter will describe the similarities and differences between the IEP and the OT intervention plan and clarify why a separate OT intervention plan is needed when practicing in the schools.
This chapter describes the purpose and suggested content of the OT intervention plan as defined in the AOTA guidelines. Guidelines for supervision and federal mandates that impact OT intervention planning will also be discussed.
This chapter describes the process for developing occupational therapy intervention plans based on the OT evaluation and IEP using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework as a guide. Factors to consider when developing an intervention plan, including planning for discharge and targeting outcomes, will also be discussed.
This chapter describes the types of occupational therapy interventions and intervention approaches as defined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework and contrasts them with the special education services as defined in IDEA.
