Most SLP graduate programs do not extensively address tracheostomy tube and mechanical ventilation management, leaving SLPs underprepared for necessary responsibilities in critical illness environments.

This webinar will help to close this gap between graduate school and effective practice through an extensive review of tracheostomy tubes and mechanical ventilation. Every SLP who helps patients with dysphagia and communication challenges after tracheostomy tube and ventilator dependence will benefit from the reviews included in this presentation, including types of mechanical ventilation, airflow changes, occluding the tracheostomy tube hub, and critical decision-making for speaking valve use and PO intake.

We will also discuss effective approaches to managing communication difficulties and dysphagia in this population, using research-based approaches and clinical problem-solving in a relevant case study. Through this presentation, participants will acquire a foundation of information related to theoretical frameworks for effective care delivery along with practical takeaways that can be incorporated immediately into their SLP practice.
