Vision is much more than meets the eye. It is a complex, multifaceted neurological process that begins with visual input traveling from the eyes to the central nervous system and integrating in the cerebellum. The cerebellum plays an especially important role in this process as it is the Grand Central train station where sensory signals from visual, vestibular, proprioceptive, and auditory input communicate with each other. In this webinar, clinicians will learn to both identify and treat visual processing challenges in children with sensory processing disorder. A case study will be thoroughly examined to demonstrate a progressive plan of care, starting with initial symptoms, assessment methods utilized, intervention techniques that address visual integration, and outcomes resulting in successful participation in childhood occupations. This webinar is applicable for OTs, COTAs, PTs, and PTAs working in pediatric outpatient hospitals, clinics, early intervention, and school-based settings.

1. Identifying Visual Processing Deficits Case Study: Caroline

This chapter will select assessment methods that target parent concerns and initial symptoms. It will review clinical observations that can tease out visual processing deficits and help viewers understand how visual processing is related to motion sickness, idiopathic toe walking, and learning challenges. Viewers will learn how retained primitive reflexes influence visual skills.

2. Intervention Strategies for Sensory Integration of the Visual System

This chapter will examine therapeutic interventions that encompass integration of visual-vestibular-proprioception input. It will explore a variety of creative activity ideas for visual processing using simple therapy equipment and supplies. Users will learn how primitive reflex integration exercises for ATNR and STNR can assist with improving visual processing and how to develop a list of school accommodations for students with visual issues and create a home program to address visual processing skills.

3. Successful Outcomes for Participation in Meaningful Activity in Everyday Life

Therapy at a young age helps with a child’s successful participation in meaningful activities as they grow older. Chapter 3 will review therapy outcomes from the case example.

4. Question and Answer Session

This chapter is a viewer-submitted question and answer session facilitated by Jenny Clark.
